Aims:

 

To promote and foster the skills required for learning a second language

  • To help prepare pupils for the World of Work and to cope with everyday situations on holiday/in the Gaeltacht areas.
  • To promote the 4 skill areas of Listening/Reading/Listening/Writing
  • To boost self-confidence and thinking skills

KS3

 

  • Pupils will learn to talk about themselves, their family and friends, where they live, their daily routine, school life, hobbies, pets, holidays and opinions.
  • Pupils take part in various role-plays in class and games (Games Class/dominoes/flashcard games etc)
  • Most pupils in Years 8-10 study a minimum of 2 periods of French and/or Irish per week
  • Pupils achieving 1st/2nd/3rd place receive a departmental postcard home after summative assessments.
  • Most pupils have the opportunity to work with a Language Assistant in small groups during timetabled sessions.

KS4 (GCSE)

 

  • Pupils cover KS3 topics in more detail and additional other topics such as Health and Environment.
  • The 4 skill areas are tested throughout Years 11 and 12.
  • All pupils complete 4 Controlled Assessments worth 60% made up as follows: (2 Speaking Tasks worth 30%) and (2 Writing Tasks worth 30%)
  • Pupils will know the content of each of these tasks prior to completing a Speaking task or Writing task.
  • Pupils will have timetabled session with the Language Assistant (where possible)
  • Pupils complete a Listening and Reading paper at the end of Year 12 (at foundation or higher tier depending on ability)

KS5 (A Level)

 

To be reviewed on an annual basis

  • Gaeltacht (Years 8-12) stay in 2 Colleges in Donegal-Coláiste Machaire Rabhartaigh and Coláiste Chú Chulainn
  • Gaeltacht Scholarships-Gael Linn/Council Scholarships
  • Junior Gael Linn Quiz(Year 10)
  • European Day of languages
  • Open Day-Year 8 presentation
  • French Breakfast
  • Silver Fáinne Exam
